    What can vibration tell you about a machine? Vibr What can vibration tell you about a machine?  Vibration is more than just a value on the screen. Its frequency spectrum can provide valuable information about the condition of rotating machinery and help identify developing faults at an early stage.  Different mechanical problems can produce different vibration patterns:  ⚙️ Imbalance — often characterized by a dominant component at 1X rotational frequency.
⚙️ Misalignment — may produce elevated vibration at 1X, 2X and higher harmonics, depending on the type and severity of misalignment.
⚙️ Bearing defects — can generate repetitive impacts and characteristic bearing frequencies such as BPFO, BPFI, BSF and FTF.
⚙️ Mechanical looseness — may produce multiple harmonics, impacts and increased broadband vibration.
⚙️ Gear problems — often appear around gear mesh frequency (GMF), its harmonics and sidebands.  This is why vibration diagnostics is not simply about asking “How much does the machine vibrate?”  The more important questions are:
At what frequencies? What pattern does the spectrum show? How is it changing over time?     When Does A-Scan Become an Essential Tool? Most u When Does A-Scan Become an Essential Tool?  Most ultrasonic thickness gauges display only one value — the measured thickness.  But is that enough when reliable inspection is critical?  Not always.  When inspecting corroded components, complex geometries, multilayer materials, or surfaces with non-uniform structures, it is essential for the operator to understand how reliable the measurement actually is.  This is exactly where A-Scan becomes invaluable.
A-Scan displays the ultrasonic signal in real time, allowing the operator to visualize echoes from material interfaces and monitor the measurement process itself.  It helps to:
✔️ Verify that the instrument has identified the correct back-wall echo;
✔️ Detect false or unwanted echo signals;
✔️ Evaluate the quality of acoustic coupling;
✔️ Improve measurement reliability on materials with complex structures;
✔️ Increase confidence in measurement results under challenging inspection conditions.  In other words, A-Scan allows the operator not only to see the measured thickness, but also to understand why the instrument produced that result.
